Danzan Ryu/Adapted Self-Defense Courses:

For the purposes of this course, technique lists are offered in two different forms depending on how the class is to be presented. Completion times and available techniques will vary for each student depending on attendance, practice, and various techniques' adaptability to special needs.
Remember that completion of a particular list depends not on whether an individual student is able to perform all the techniques, but rather, whether an individual student performs all the techniques she/he is able to. So, while individual results may vary, successful completion is always possible.

1. Teaching or learning Adapted Danzan Ryu as a self-defense course.

For this course one should use the SELF DEFENSE ARTS list. This list is a compilation of the CORE ARTS and SENIOR ARTS, offering the most essential and practical techniques in a shorter time period. When presented as self-defense, the course can be completed in about twelve weeks when attended on a regular weekly basis.
The self-defense course allows students to learn to effectively defend themselves without an overly necessary time commitment. While this does not allow as much time for many of the development opportunities that martial arts have to offer, it is a more practical solution for individuals who are in the class area for only a limited period of time (such as students on a college campus with semesters of sixteen weeks).

2. Teaching or learning Adapted Danzan Ryu as a martial art course.

For this course one should use the CORE ARTS and SENIOR ARTS lists. When presented in this manner, the course can be completed in about a one year time period. As the names imply, the Core list is for the Junior student (first 6 months), while the Senior list (second 6 months) is for students who have completed the Core list and attained Senior rank. Once a student has become a Senior, she/he may begin assisting in teaching Core techniques to Junior students; thus continuing the tradition of the Kodenkan, transmitting the tradition from the Senior to the Junior.
The extra time commitment required when presenting the course as a martial art allows continued study for the more devoted students, additional techniques and development of existing techniques, and greater personal and group development.
Truly, there are many things that can only be learned through the passage of time.
