What is Danzan Ryu Jujitsu?
Kodenkan Danzan Ryu Jujitsu (or Jujutsu in
Japanese) is an unarmed/few weapon combat
art typified by:
- Joint locks
- Grab escapes
- Pressure point techniques
- Chokes
- Throws
- Weapons defenses
- and Submission holds
Kodenkan is translated as "Ancient Transmission School", meaning
"the school where the tradition is transmitted from the senior student to
the junior student".
This was the name of the school where Danzan Ryu was first taught in Honolulu
on the island of Oahu by it's originator, Prof. "Henry" Seishiro Okazaki
(see contents).
Danzan is a word translated to Japanese from Chinese as "Sandalwood
Mountain".
This was a term used to describe the Hawaiian islands, since they were
once covered with these aromatic trees.
Ryu translates as "school of training" or "style".
Jujutsu translates as "Gentle Art".
"Gentle" refers to how the techniques flow and require little strength by
the person applying them. However, it is not the case that these same
techniques are gentle on the aggressor.
"Art" refers to the martial or combat arts.
Jujutsu is one of the original and oldest martial arts in history. Many
of today's modern martial arts were originally based on techniques from
Jujutsu including Karate, Aikido, Judo, and many others. Often you will
see the word Jujutsu translated with such spellings as Jujitsu, Jiu-Jitsu,
or Jiu-Jutsu. These different spellings are simply based on varied
translations and all refer to the same word, Jujutsu.
To clarify, Danzan Ryu is a style of Jujitsu and Kodenkan is the name
of it's original school and teaching style.
If translated, Kodenkan Danzan Ryu Jujutsu means:
"Ancient Transmission School Sandalwood Mountain (Hawaiian) Style
Jujitsu"
